If you’re diligent about visiting your dentist in Mount Vernon for semi-annual checkups and cleanings, then the current federal and state requirements that dentists are to only provide essential dental care, has interrupted your normal way of life. Until the COVID-19 virus is brought under control and you can restart your regular visits, there are some steps you can take to protect your teeth and gums. Continue reading to get the information you need!

Brush Your Teeth More Often

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush your teeth at least two times a day. If you’re working from home, this is a great opportunity to step-up your efforts. Commit to brushing after every meal, which will make it even harder for oral bacteria to accumulate.

For the best results, use a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent any gum irritation. Also, be sure to clean your teeth for at least two minutes each session.

Make Flossing a Priority

Because it takes a little more effort to floss, you may feel compelled to skip it. Just know that it can leave up to 40% of your teeth unclean. So to rid your mouth of excess debris and bacteria, commit to flossing at least two times a day.

Monitor Your Sugar Intake

In one regard, it can be great to have more time on your hands. But, it can become problematic if you give in to the urge to snack on processed foods like pastries, chips, ice cream and other items that are loaded with sugar, which happens to attract oral bacteria. Over time, the microorganisms can form plaque, which is a sticky substance that clings to the teeth and along the gum line.

Here are some better alternatives:

  • Eat more fruit – The natural sugars contained in fruit are better processed by the body and are far less detrimental to your oral health.
  • Consider alternative sweeteners – Some sugar-free ways to sweeten your food and beverages are stevia, xylitol and monk fruit.
  • Incorporate more protein into your diet – You don’t always have to give in to a craving for processed foods. One way to control it is to eat more protein. Some quick snack options are beef jerky, tuna in the pouch, nuts, cheese sticks and yogurt.

A Recipe for a Successful Visit

No one wants to visit the dentist only to be reminded of how poor his or her oral health is. By following these suggestions, when you’re able to attend your next appointment, you’ll have the confidence of knowing that you’ve done what’s necessary to fortify your teeth and gums. And like anything else in life, when you combine the right information with proper execution, you can expect positive results!
